Horizon Power’s Onslow microgrid project has been successfully powered with 100% renewable energy for the first time, successfully demonstrating the capability of advanced microgrid technology as Australia begins to transition towards a predominantly de-centralised power generation infrastructure model.
CPS National were engaged by Horizon Power in 2018 to design, supply, install and commission the 1MVA solar photovoltaic (PV) system located adjacent to the new Onslow power station. The 1MVA solar farm was successfully completed and subsequently energised in June 2019 and has been operating in conjunction with the adjacent newly constructed gas-fired modular power station.
The Onslow microgrid utilises a Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) to successfully integrate traditional energy sources with customer and utility solar and battery infrastructure. DERMS use predictive analytics to maximise the utilisation of renewable energy within the township of Onslow, Western Australia, whilst ensuring continued network stability and integrity for the community.
Horizon Power successfully operated the Onslow microgrid with 100% renewable energy generation for 80 minutes throughout the demonstration.
